About the exhibit
In the ‘Time Eater’ graphic artwork, Konstantin Chaykin continues his search for new watch executions inspired by mythological characters. The prototype for this drawing was the langoliers from Stephen King's eponymous novella. These creatures devour time and reality. Chaykin translates this literary image into the language of the watch movement. He transforms the wheel into a characteristic yawning, toothy mouth, after which the watch acquires the features of a predatory creature. Time itself appears in the blueprint as something mythical and unsettling.
The artwork is executed in watercolour, which gives the image dynamism and expressiveness. To create contrast, Konstantin Chaykin chooses a particular colour palette: he paints the background in ochre and the figure itself in grey, turning a mechanical component into an allegory of anxiety and the relentless forward motion of time.
