About the exhibit
For many of artworks, Konstantin Chaykin drew inspiration from the Asian cultural code. The image of the panda, which in Chinese tradition is not merely a symbol of kindness and harmlessness, as in Western popular culture, but also signifies balance, inner stability and natural harmony. Chaykin transfers this meaning into the graphic artwork, converting a recognisable animal into a Horological Archetype.
By 2022, the master had already developed a execution structure optimal for animal-themed Wristmons, a kind of canon of mechanical anatomy for this line of watches: the upper lugs of the case invariably echo the shape of the character's ears, the crown occupies the upper or lower position, at 12 or 6 o'clock, standing in for a nose or crown of the head, and oversized pupils, here covering the entire surface of the eye, make the Wristmon's gaze recognisable at first glance. In this way, the drafting structure of the graphic artwork serves not only to fix the future form of the case but to work out a universal grammatical rule, one by which every new character in this animal series will later be assembled, carrying the idea from the graphic artwork as the primary form of thought to a stable, reproducible archetype.
