About the exhibit
‘From Dawn to Dusk’ is a self-portrait dedicated to the watchmaker's daily, almost monastic labor. The master's figure, bent over a tiny movement, is set between a warm ochre background and a cool turquoise floor, the boundary dividing the realm of thought from the realm of matter. Above his head, a toothed sun of dawn and a lunar disc of dusk converge, closing the circle of the day while the hands of the artist engineer continue shaping yet another ruby jewel.
The watchmaker's labor has long been compared to monastic devotion: working on the smallest details requires not only skill but a particular state of mind, silence, concentration, an almost meditative repetition of the same movements over many hours. It was no accident that medieval monasteries were among the first centers of mechanical horology in Europe: monks needed precise timekeeping to observe the canonical hours of prayer, and it was in monastery workshops that the earliest technical traditions took shape, later passing to secular watchmakers. The artwork asserts that value lies not in a single moment of discovery but in the watchmaker's daily, recurring labor: it is constancy, not a one time effort, that aligns the master's work with the flow of time itself.
