Oscillia

This is one of Konstantin Chaykin's artworks from the Universum ‘Time-Magic Enchantresses’,where the artist extends the principle of anthropomorphism to the very forms of the watch movement's components. Here the master draws on a folkloric feminine figure. She is kin to the nymphs of antiquity, whose dominion over the spring was once taken as dominion over the river's time, and to the household spirits of Slavic legend. He gives her shape in the balance bridge and the balance wheel, the assembly whose oscillations must be tuned to perfection if a watch is to keep true time.

In this way, a technical detail is raised to the status of a character, and engineering calculation, following the logic of the movement, is granted a face and a temperament of its own. The precision of the watch's rate reads, in turn, as an allegory of a high order. Just as, in myths of the hearth's guardians, the world's equilibrium rests on the unseen, almost imperceptible labour of women's hands, so the accuracy of a watch rests on an oscillation audible only to the practised ear. Oscillia thus becomes an embodiment of time's hidden geometry, whose eternal pulse sustains order both within the movement and beyond it, a principle not unlike that by which, in ancient philosophy, the steady wheeling of the celestial spheres was held to guarantee the harmony of the cosmos entire.
