The second, revised and expanded edition of the definitive book about the watchmaker-inventor and his renowned brand

Since the first edition, the master has been granted his hundredth patent and has had an asteroid named after him. He has created the Stargazer — the most complicated wristwatch ever made in Russia, ThinKing — the world’s thinnest mechanical wristwatch, the world’s first Martian tourbillon, the world’s first Martian perpetual calendar module and the White Rabbit, a watchmaker’s take on the phantasmagorical world of Alice in Wonderland. All of these art pieces are covered in detail and illustrated with exclusive drawings of the movements from the master’s personal archives.

The most striking growth, however, has been in the Wristmon population. After the successful launch of the Joker, the collection took a turn its own creator had not foreseen: more inventive, more playful — exactly as the character of the Wristmons demands. That is why the chapter devoted to them, now greatly expanded and entirely rewritten, opens the book: so that you encounter, from the very first pages, a fully fledged universe that evolves according to the laws of its own world.

The edition also introduces entirely new Art Universe. A multidisciplinary artist, inventor and watchmaker, Chaykin works at the intersection of visual art, engineering and the philosophy of time. His artistic practice grows out of watchmaking but reaches far beyond it, transforming mechanical elements into archetypes, allegories and mythological images on canvas.

His paintings carry both conceptual and material value. Unlike watchmaking, where an idea demands engineering to be realised, painting captures thought in the moment.

Ahead of you lies an absorbing bank of how new projects and ideas were born, where the master finds his inspiration, and what meanings he invests in each of his creations.

The book concludes with a detailed glossary of watchmaking terms.
