This year the world celebrates the 300th anniversary of the first publication of Antonio Vivaldi’s renowned set of twelve concertos, Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione. The opening four concertos, better known as The Four Seasons (Le quattro stagioni), have inspired listeners for three centuries. Their musical dialogue between tradition and innovation resonates with the work of Konstantin Chaykin, an outstanding contemporary watchmaker.

In 2021 Chaykin patented a unique perpetual calendar that assigns a separate dial to each season, though its realisation was deferred. He first embodied the idea in painting; the canvas Autumn debuted at his personal exhibition last year. The present lot is the preparatory sketch for that work. Painted in a warm palette that evokes early autumn, with golden leaves, sunlit days and the season’s first frosts, it focuses on the Autumn calendar module created for Chaykin’s Four Seasons timepieces.
